Ascension 2018: Date and leave

Each year, the Ascension takes place 40 days after Easter. For 2018, the date of the Ascension is Thursday 10 May.

What is Ascension?

Ascension is a Christian holiday celebrating the elevation to heaven of Jesus Christ after his resurrection (see dates of Easter 2018). This date is a public holiday in several European countries, including Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and Monaco for countries bordering France.

As Ascension is always held on a Thursday, the holiday can therefore enable employees "to bridge" the following weekend when not working on Friday. To know the rules of the applicable labor law, see bridges and public days: rights and compensation of employees.

At school

Warning: this school year 2017 - 2018, the bridge of Ascension will now be removed for students of primary and secondary school. The Ministry of Education has decided not to grant this day. Although an important absenteeism is expected, the children will have to go to school Friday, May 11, 2018.
